From time to time, but with decreasing frequency the past decade, I’ve taken on private commissions. In this case, a collector reached out to me wanting to collaborate on an artwork that they’d purchase and own, they’d also produce a standard Magic playmat from it.
As such, this summoning scene was described and we got to work. Because it was going to also be printed as a playmat, I formatted it in that wide horizontal. I was provided with a couple of photos of someone known to the collector who would be the wizard at the center of the action here. It’s tricky to take photos of a person and draw a likeness at a different angle and with differing lighting from what you are given—I’d call it one of the most difficult things to do, actually.
